If YOU are being bullied, there are lots of things you can do!
You can:
You can:
- Ignore them! Bullies are looking for a reaction from you, so ignoring them makes them not interested in picking on you because you didn't give them the power they wanted.
- Walk away when they approach you. Temporarily avoiding the bully may help them calm down.
- Stay positive. It can be hard to remember how awesome you are when someone is trying their best to be negative and mean. Focus on all of the things that you do well and on those that truly care about you!
- Hang around other people. Find friends who would rather be your buddy than a bully. Sometimes these friends may change, and it may hurt your feelings, but always surround yourself with positive people! True friends care about you for who you are.
- Be CONFIDENT! Bullies usually pick on people that they think are weaker than they are. Be proud to be you! Stand up for who you are!
- Tell them to leave you alone. Sometimes preventing bullying is as easy as telling them to stop. Use the word "bullying." They may not understand that their actions are hurtful to you. Teasing is one example of this! Teasing can be silly, or it can be mean. If you tease, expect to be teased back! If you don't want to play the teasing "game" tell them calmly, but firmly to stop. Don't scream, but do make sure that they have heard you clearly.
- Be nice. Some bullies pick on others because they feel powerless and upset about something going on outside of school. Remember to be kind always, and not to let anger or frustration turn you into a bully as well! Treat everyone with respect and the same way YOU would want to be treated. Be a good example of how a 4th grader should behave!
- Laugh. Bullying is not a laughing matter, but that doesn't mean that you have to be "hooked" by it either! Bullies enjoy making other people miserable... Don't let someone else's bad behavior sour your own mood!
- Have a sense of humor and change the subject. Example: Bully: "Four-Eyes!" You: "No, unfortunately I only have two, but can you IMAGINE if I had four!? How cool would that be!?"
- If all else fails, TELL AN ADULT! There is a difference between telling and tattling. It it is important to first learn how to deal with bullying on your own, but NEVER be afraid to tell someone! f you are being bullied, or if you know someone who is, telling is VERY important. Bullying hurts. It can hurt someone physically outside or emotionally inside. Sometimes adults don't know that there is bullying going on and we need your help! Telling can not only help someone stay safe, it can help the bully too. They need to learn how to handle frustrating situations in a healthy way, and why hurting others won't help. You can tell a parent, the principal, a custodian, another teacher, or me. I want you to feel safe. I want you to feel happy. I want to help! Be brave. Telling IS standing up to bullying!
