1. Reading Assessment
Your child's initial reading level will be determined through the STAR Reading Enterprise assessment during school hours. The results of this test will be sent home for parent as review!
2. Guided Leveled-Reading Practice
Your child will be coached on how to find books within their specific reading range in the classroom and in the library. All of my classroom books have been leveled as well, and contain a wide variety of genres and subjects to meet the interests of all readers!
Your child will be tested frequently on their reading fluency (automatic word recognition), both in class and for homework. Developing a child's reading fluency will increase the speed, smoothness, and expression with which they read. It often directly relates to their comprehension abilities as well!

3. Individualized Leveled-Reading Practice
Students will read books of interest at their own reading level. During school hours, the kids have designated reading time built into the day. They may also read silently whenever they finish work early, and reading at home is always strongly encouraged! To find the A.R. levels for books you already have at home, click here!
4. Students Take an A.R. Quiz
Students are only able to take quizzes online during school hours. You can, however, monitor your child's quiz results from home!
Students earn points for books that they read and test on (with 70% or better results). Smaller, easier books are generally worth half a point, while chapter books can range from one to five or more points, based on the book's difficulty and length. Students will only earn the full amount of points for their book if they answer all of their quiz questions correctly. The fewer correct answers, the fewer points they will earn.
Each grade level has set a specific A.R. point goal. The A.R. Medal Goal for 4th grade is 75 points! Students that meet or exceed this goal will receive their reading medal at our end of the school year assembly.

5. Immediate Feedback
Your student will have immediate feedback once they have completed their quiz! They will be able to determine how many questions they answered correctly, how many points they have earned, and if they "passed" that particular story quiz. They will also be able to review any questions that they missed. Finally, your child will be able to see their collectively earned points and current overall progress.
Please note: your child will not be able to take a quiz on a book below their current reading level! I will be checking their progress frequently to determine that they are a) taking quizzes, b) selecting appropriately leveled books, and c) comprehending at their tested reading range.

6. Repeat
The students will re-test on the A.R. STAR assessment at the middle and end of each trimester. If I determine that your child is either struggling at their current reading level, or has made tremendous growth and is not being challenged enough, I will give them an additional test.
