What Is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader, or "A.R.," is an online program that helps teachers measure each student's individual reading levels and needs. This program has been adopted school-wide, however, each teacher tests and retests students at their own discretion. Students in my class are tested 2-3 times a trimester in order to provide the student, his or her parents, and me with the most accurate and up-to-date information. All students have daily opportunities to read independently at their appropriate reading levels, and take online comprehension quizzes in order to earn A.R. points on completed books.
Please Note:
Quizzes may only be taken at McKinley during school hours,
and cannot be re-taken!

F.A.Q. & Quick Links

Visit A.R. Book Finder! |
"Where can I order inexpensive books for my child at their current A.R. level?"

"Can I check my child's current A.R. points online?"
I use points earned as part of your child's overall narrative and informational reading grade. It is therefore critical that the students follow the schedule above, and read at home if they are behind. You can check your child's current points, which books they have been testing on, and the average AR level of those books by clicking the image below! The username is "cnusd" followed by your child's student ID (lunch number).
The password is your child's first and last name initials followed by their birthdate. Do not add zeros before months or days (March would be 3, not 03). For example: USERNAME: cnusd123456 <- Miss Hanrahan's "student" ID number (lunch number) PASSWORD: MH3161983 <- Miss Hanrahan's birthdate (March 16, 1983) *If the MH doesn’t work as is, try Mh3161983. The system may be case sensitive. |
"Why isn't my child earning any A.R. points?"
If your child is not earning any points, they are either: a) not fully reading the material b) reading books that are too challenging and not within their reading range, c) not taking quizzes. The quizzes often rely heavily on vocabulary comprehension, so it is important that your child truly understand everything that he/she is reading and not just the "general idea" prior to taking the quiz! This is especially true for books that have been made into movies!!! Please Note:
While I always expect students to challenge themselves to their utmost abilities, some exceptions may be made, per my discretion, for students participating in Resource or E.L.D., dependent upon their individual needs. |
