Fun Ways to Practice Spelling
1. Folds: On a piece of paper, write your shortest spelling word. After the word, write how many letters it has. Then, write the next shortest and how many letters it has. Then, the next shortest, and so on. Include all words from list.
2. Blank Spots: Have someone write each word but leave blank spots for some of the letters. Put in the missing letters. (Example: Un_t_d S_a_es)
3. Puzzle Words: Write each word with space in between each letter. Cut the letters apart and mix them up. Then, put the letter from each word together and glue them on a piece of paper like a puzzle.
4. Rainbow Spelling: Write each word once in pencil. Trace the word with 3 other colors.
5. Word Patterns: Fold a piece of paper in half long-ways. Write your spelling words on one side of the fold. On the other side of the fold, write a word (not from your list) that has the same spelling pattern (ie: knife.... knight: silent K).
6. Scrambled Words: Fold a piece of paper in half long-ways. On the left side of the paper, have someone write your words with the letters mixed up. Unscramble the letters to find the correct word and write it on the right side of the fold.
7. Dial-a-Word: Get a toy or portable telephone. Using the letters on the keys, pretend to dial your spelling words saying each letter of the word as you dial it. Then write down the word and the numbers that go with it. (Example: Goodbye = 4663293)
8. Consonants & Vowels: Write the spelling words in crayon or colored pencil. Write each consonant letter in red and each vowel in blue.
9. Cursive: Print each word. Next to it, write the word in cursive.
10. Flashcards: Make a set of flashcards for studying your words.
11. Sentences: Write a quality sentence for each one of your spelling words. The sentences should make sense and be in your best handwriting. Don’t forget to underline the words!
12. Practice Test: Take a Practice Test at home given by your parent/guardian. Write any missed words 3 times correctly.
13. Syllables: Write your spelling words as many times as there are syllables.
14. Word Search: Make and complete a word search using www.puzzlemaker.com
15. Write a Letter: Write a letter to a friend or relative using the proper format. Underline each spelling word.
16. Sing it: Write a song using all of the spelling words. Underline the spelling words.
17. Dictionary: Look up spelling words in the dictionary. Write the definition & the part of
speech.
18. Disappearing Act: Write each word over and over, each time make one letter disappear until they are all gone.
(ex. SPELL, _PELL, __ELL, ___LL, ____L, _____)
19. Bubbles and Blocks: Write each word using bubble or block letters.
20. Play Dough Words: Use play dough to form letters to spell out each word.
21. Pipe Cleaner Words: Use pipe cleaners and bend and form to make letters used to write out the words.
22. Yarn Words: Use yarn and scissors and to snip and create letters and spell out the words.
23. Puffy Paint Words: Use puffy paint to write words.
24. Stamp It: Use alphabet stamps and ink pads to stamp out words or use fingerprints to write words if you don't have letter stamps.
25. Paint It: Use a paintbrush and paint to spell words.
26. Finger Paint: Get messy and have some fun finger painting while spelling your words!
27. Type It: Type your spelling words on the computer, iPad, or lap top.
28. Salt/Sand/Flour Tray: Spell words using finger or paintbrush (great sensory experience too). Put colored construction paper under the salt, sand or flour to make the letters really pop.
29. Trace: Trace your words on the back of your hand or palm. Focus on properly forming each letter so you can feel it being drawn.
30. Sidewalk Chalk (or Paint): Go outside and spell your words using sidewalk chalk.
31. Shaving Cream: Make a thin layer of shaving cream on a tray and use a paintbrush, or better yet a fingertip, to spell out the words. (Have some napkins on hand.)
32. Trace in the Air: Trace the letters in the air to spell each word.
33. Alphabet Blocks: Use ABC blocks to spell words.
34. Letter Beads: Use alphabet letter beads and pipe cleaners to build words.
35. Small/Medium/Large Words: Write the word using the smallest letters that you can possibly write, then write it normal sized, and finally jumbo sized!
36. Build a Word with Legos: Using Legos, build your spelling words.
37. Q-Tip Writing: Use q-tips and paint to dot letters and spell each word.
38. Magnet Letters: Take a cookie sheet or use your refrigerator, add some magnetic letters, and spell out the words.
39. Glue & Glitter: Write out spelling words in glue and sprinkle some glitter on top. Glitter makes everything fun, doesn't it?
40. Marble Words: Use flat bottom decorative marbles to form the letters needed to spell words. You could also use small rocks, decorative gems, or whatever you have handy.
41. Coffee Filters & Markers: Using markers, wrote your spelling words on coffee filters. Once you are all done, use a spray bottle to spritz water on the filter to turn your spelling practice into art!
42. Hidden Spelling Words: On a white piece of paper, write out the spelling words using a white crayon. Once all words have been written use watercolor paint to make hidden words appear.
43. Paint (or Hair Gel) Bags: Pour paint into a Ziplock freezer bag and seal. Use your fingertips to write your words on the bag. To erase, simply squish the bag and you are ready for the next word.
44. Alpha-Bit Spelling: Use Alpha-Bit cereal, alphabet pasta, or even alphabet cookies to spell words - this can even double as a snack when done reviewing if you use the cereal or cookies.
45. Print Words: Use newspaper or magazine print to cut out fun letters. Make words using clipped letters.
46. Toothpick Letters: Use toothpicks to build letters and make spelling words. Glue to a piece of paper, or connect the letters with marshmallows!
48. Other Hand: If you are right-handed, write your words using your left hand, if you are left-handed, write words using your right hand.
49. Mirror Writing: Use Dry Erase Markers and write words on your bathroom mirror. This works especially well for remembering tough words throughout the week (and writing on mirrors is SO much more fun than writing on paper).
50. Scrabble Spelling: Use scrabble pieces to build words. For some math fun, add the numbers at the bottom for each word too.
51. Penny Spelling: Use pennies to form letters and spell out words.
52. Partner Spell: Take turns adding a letter to spell each word. For example, for the word VERY, start by saying the letter V, parents adds letter E, you say R, and your partner completes word by adding the letter Y. This requires focus and listening!
53. Record: Use a tape recorder or a cell phone to record yourself spelling words.
54. Make a Video: Use the household video camera or a cell phone to take a quick video of you spelling the words.
55. Microphone: Spell words into a microphone. Practice those spelling words too using different voices (silly, tired, old, scared, excited, whisper, etc.)

62. Spelling Pyramid: Start by writing the first letter of a word on a lined piece of paper. On the second line, write the first and second letters. On the third line, write the first, second, and third letters, etc.
